Long House: A Masterpiece of Modern Architecture

Architect Tonny Wirawan Suriadjaja's Award-Winning Residential Design

The Long House, a residential design by Tonny Wirawan Suriadjaja, stands as a testament to modern architectural innovation. Its unique structure and eco-friendly design principles have earned it a Silver A' Design Award in 2019.

Located in the North of Bandung City, far from the city's heavy traffic, the Long House is a marvel of modern design. Its structure consists of three massing stacked together, creating an H-shaped form when viewed from above. The building's name, Long House, is derived from its long and horizontal shape, a design strategy employed by the architect to maximize open air and view.

The Long House's unique properties lie in its extensive use of glass as an enclosure, enhancing the openness of the space and providing a natural ventilation system. The openings also offer expansive outdoor views, allowing the owner to enjoy the outdoor features such as vegetation and the sound of water, creating a tranquil atmosphere. A shallow pond functions as an element that produces a cool refreshing breeze as the wind flows into the building, reducing the need for air-conditioning and thus lowering operating costs.

The realization of the Long House design involved the use of modern materials and technologies. The concrete wall with a white paint finish represents modernity and was chosen for its rigidity and durability. Recycled wood was used as finishes for the flooring, ceiling, and façade, creating a tropical and modern atmosphere both inside and outside the building.

The Long House covers a built area of 665 sqm. The ground floor comprises the living, dining, and service area, while the second floor houses the master bedroom, kids' bedrooms, and study room. The rooftop floor functions as an open social space, further enhancing the house's appeal as a residential and social hub.

The design of the Long House was realized through extensive research and multiple interviews with the client. The architect's intention was to take advantage of Bandung's cool climate by creating a house that is open, green, and friendly to the surroundings. The result is a design that ties together nature and man-made environments through the use of concrete, wood, and greenery.

As a testament to its innovative design, the Long House was awarded the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Long House, with its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, truly showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
